Ever wonder how to set up a volumetric material in mental ray for Maya? Parti_volume can be kind of tricky, but once you get it working the results are very rewarding. This technique is also photonic, so the physical accuracy is available.

The volume on this is going to get fixed soon. Until it does, you can still follow along with the video.

The wind coming off the ocean was freezing cold. I ducked behind some cliffs to get warm and got a few pictures. Took the long way home through Slocum and got the hay rolls. I think they look like D-cell batteries.

Another night of scrambling down a rock face, hanging on with my fingertips above the crashing waves. In the distance the lights of Newport and Narragansett shimmered like pearls. While my flashlight was on it seemed like it was snowing. I could only raise my hood, bury my hands in my pockets and patiently wait out the eight minute exposures.

It was terrifying. I was making an eigh-minute exposure, the roaring waves were crashing in, and I was all by myself in the middle of the night. Suddenly out of the corner of my eye I saw two silhoutted figures appear from behind the rocks. With a supernatural agility and speed, one of them stepped from rock to rock to the furthest tip of the island and stood there with the waves crashing at hist feet. Anyone who has read HP Lovecraft’s Shadow Over Innsmouth will understand my fear and concern. There may just be a Cthulu worshipping sect in Jamestown.

When I left the house I honestly didn’t mean to go scrambling up and down sea cliffs in flip-flops. But there I was, one hand holding the tripod, the other hand clinging to the rocks. It turns out there is no cell phone service at the bottom of a canyon. Not that I needed to make any calls, but I got bored making four minute exposures.

After ten exposures I finally wrote 365 on my arm, then figure out what its mirror image would be, rehearsed the motions and finally got it.

I’ve wanted to do more studio photography for a long time now. Tonight I was inspired by some low-key images and decided to do a self portrait. The sunspots from looking into the light will go away some time next week hopefully.
